Sab se Karara!

5th Kara Film Festival 2005 was held from 1st Dec 2005 to 11th Dec 2005 in Karachi. As I am very fond of movies especially shorts, I attended the day screenings at PIIA on 4th and 10th. The film festival was accompanied by an art exhibition which was very creative, I must say. There were some disappointments from the side of management but overall the films and the festival rocked. As this post or review whatever you wanna say it, is quite long so I will be discussing it in two parts.

Part 1 – 4TH December 2004

Documentary: Peace One Day by Jeremy Gilley
PEACE ONE DAY is the story of one man’s attempts to persuade the global community via the United Nations to officially sanction a global ceasefire day; a day of non-violence; a day of Peace. This documentary charts the remarkable 6-year journey of the filmmaker as he meets heads of state, Nobel Peace Laureates, aid agencies, freedom fighters, media moguls, the innocent victims of war and, eventually, everyone who was anyone at the UN. An individual genuinely can make a difference: The UN International Day of Peace is now fixed in the calendar on 21st September annually. The real challenge has now begun - to get the world to unite on a day fast approaching.

What a global ceasefire day can do? Some may ask a question like what will be use of only one day when no one would fight? First of all, every journey starts with a single step, a single change. It is not only about peace for one day. There are a lot of advantages under the layers of this one mission of peace. This peace will enable UNO and NGOs to transfer aids and goods to places where it’s tough to reach these destinations because of war circumstances. Secondly, many children can be immunized on this day. The list of advantages continues, you just have to think about it.

This documentary or journey of a single person proves that if everyone will try to make a difference in his/her own power then collectively a huge change can be created, after all God has given humans a lot of power in their hands. One interesting fact, on 11th September on first world peace day, when President of United Nations Mr. Kofi Annan rang the bell of peace, the WTC was attacked. Still this person didn’t lose hope and continued with his mission. So what would you do on next 21st September?

Short Film: HOME by Faisal Rehman
The story was interesting, treatment was pathetic but a unique climax always works. I hated the background score filled with cheap Indian songs but Uzma Gilani’s performance was breath taking. The director was not available for Q/A session - as his presence was promised - which is ethically incorrect. You can watch this movie on 15TH Dec 2005 at 8:00 PM PST time on Hum TV.

Short Film: Ohhh.. by Sarmad Khoosat
Ohhh.. a telefilm part of ‘Tamaasha Ghar’ Series was also screened. It was a great fun to watch, very inspiring. And the background score was like a bar of Bounty.. yummy sufi music. It talked about an old person who aspired to become actor when he was young and now he got a chance to act in a movie. When he reached the sets, he came to know that he only had to perform one scene which had a word Ohhh. He put a lot of hard work for that scene because he understood the fact that every word possess a great meaning in it, if communicated and interpreted effectively. Some people also celebrate their failures that is how Kara described this film which is also correct. The film talks about aspirations and hard work that a person should honestly do in order to achieve those dreams. The film was appreciated by every single person. Director was there but the poor management didn’t even care to call him for Q/A session for which he specially came from lahore. All that he got was a hand full of applause and then he had to leave with a long face. An insult for sure to director of such callibre.

Talk by Subhash Ghai was cancelled because he had to leave for India a day before.

The films were good but the volunteers stinked at 4th.
